  • ew initiative for the recycling of immobilized vehicles by Kosmocar with the aim of reducing the environmental burden and at the same time further upgrading the island
  • In the summer, exclusively electric transportation services will be presented with the sharing of vehicles
The transformation of Astypalea into a "smart and sustainable" island by the Volkswagen Group and the support of Kosmocar is evolving rapidly as the first private customers on the beautiful island of the Aegean received their Volkswagen ID electric cars.
Kosmocar handed over the ID.3 Pure and ID.4 electric cars to their new owners in the Chora of Astypalea. As a result, the fleet of electric vehicles in Astypalea is further increasing, since the local authorities have been using electric cars since last year. The program "Astypalea: smart and sustainable island" is a joint initiative of the Volkswagen Group and the Hellenic Republic that aims in the coming years to create a pioneering mobility system in Astypalea with a green environmental footprint. For this purpose, the current transport system on the island will be replaced using electric vehicles, along with the production of renewable energy.

As part of the "Astypalea: smart and sustainable island" program, the residents of Astypalea enjoy a special subsidy and preferential prices to get the electric vehicle they want. In order to use as many electric vehicles as possible on the island as a means of transportation, there are several options to choose from. The local resident can choose from a wide range of Volkswagen electric cars, such as the flexible e-up !, the pioneer ID.3 and the impressive SUV, ID.4. All purely electric and with the most advanced technology of Volkswagen. Finally, among the options is the electric scooter SEAT MÓ 125.

Mr. Thanos Papagiannis, a firm advocate of the transition to e-mobility, replaced a Golf 3 with his new Volkswagen ID.3 and stated: " E-mobility is a perfect match for Astypalea. The distances here are short, the power consumption is low, and the charging network is now very well developed. I really hope that Astypalea will inspire other regions to increase their efforts for climate protection adopting e-mobility solutions.”

Volkswagen’s commitment to the sustainable development of Astypalea goes even beyond the electrification of the vehicle fleet. Recently, the Volkswagen importer for Greece Kosmocar launched launched an initiative to recycle old and abandoned vehicles located on the island in order to reduce the environmental burden and at the same time further upgrade the island. Broken motorcycles, rusty cars and parked trucks were just points of pollution on the beautiful island of Astypalea. The recycling campaign aims to eliminate the relevant environmental impact and at the same time to highlight even more the beauty of Astypalea. The vehicles are initially collected by volunteers, then transported by ship to Athens and finally recycled by specialized partners.

In the summer, the Volkswagen Group with the support of Kosmocar will present the next milestone of the "Astypalea: smart and sustainable island" program, which will involve innovative, exclusively electric transportation services in cooperation with local companies. Vehicle sharing services, i.e. ride-sharing and vehicle sharing, come to improve mobility on the island of Astypalea by actively contributing to the reduction of the total number of vehicles on the island.
